REbeL's "Love Yo-Self" Photoshoot: A Body Positive Initiative

BY: ZSHEKINAH COLLIER

REbeL is a new group at American University, a peer education organization founded in 2008 to redefine health and beauty and promote self-love. REbeL has chapters at middle and high schools, colleges and community centers across the country, according to the organization's website.

AU's chapter held a photoshoot to encourage body positivity.  The "Love Yo-Self" event celebrated the beauty of students around campus.

The group's goal is to eliminate the anxiety and insecurity that many people experience while taking pictures. Participants gathered last Saturday, Nov. 4 to share what they love about themselves and why they view themselves as beautiful on whiteboards. Each affirmation started with "I Am Beautiful Because... " or "I Love My..."

"Love Yo-Self"  was REbeL's second event this semester. Last month, the group hosted an open mic in Bridge about body positivity. REbeL hopes its efforts in reaching out to others on campus, like sororities, fraternities and other organizations, will continue spreading their message of body positivity and self-love.
